LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — The death toll for the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century has increased by one, to 99, after Maui County police found additional remains. The remains were recovered on Oct. 12 in Lahaina, police spokesperson Alana Pico said in an email Friday. So far police have identified the remains of 97 people from the Aug. 8 fire that wiped out much of Lahaina, a historic town on Maui's west coast. Powerful winds related to a hurricane passing to Hawaii's south carried embers from house to house and hampered firefighting efforts. WASHINGTON, Aug 26 (Reuters) - The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency on Saturday briefly issued an evacuation order for West Maui due to brush fire. The order was in place for Anapuni Loop to West Mahipulu, the agency said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The order was subsequently lifted after firefighters stopped forward movement of the fire, the agency said in a follow-up post. Expect conditions that may make driving difficult and watch for public safety personnel operating in the area," the order said. The richest 10% of Americans' income has generated 40% of US carbon emissions, a new study found. Tax shareholders rather than focusing on consumers, the study authors argue. How much carbon emissions are produced in the supply chain to create the earnings of each income group, pre-tax. Not only was the top 10% earners' income generating over 40% of emissions, but the income of the top 1% was responsible for 15%-17% of emissions, they found. Lahaina, Hawaii CNN —As the boat approaches Lahaina, the sun is strong, the waves crest into whitecaps and on the shore, so much is black. The ruins stretch as far as the eye can see, 100-foot coconut trees charred all the way up their trunks. Survivors have told CNN how traffic stood at a standstill as the fire approached, forcing some people to run into the ocean to try to save themselves. He told CNN he would open his farmland to house those without homes and urged others to stay away but send any help they could. “Every single home in Lahaina is gone,” he said.

KAHULUI, Hawaii, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The death toll from a wildfire that killed at least 55 people on Hawaii's Maui island was expected to rise on Friday, as search teams prepared to comb through the charred ruins of a historic resort town for more victims. "Understand this: Lahaina Town is hallowed, sacred ground right now," Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said, referring to humans remains that have yet to be recovered. In addition to searching for the missing, officials were drafting a plan to house the newly homeless in hotels and tourist rental properties. The Lahaina fire is one of three major wildfires on Maui. There was no estimate for the Upcountry fire in the center of the eastern mass of the island, Maui County said.
